History

In 1970, Mr. Wilson Greatbatch, inventor of the first successful implantable pacemaker, founded Wilson Greatbatch Ltd. The company quickly became, and remains today, the world’s leading manufacturer of medical batteries for implantable applications – supplying the technology for over 90% of the batteries used in cardiac rhythm management devices worldwide.

In the mid 1970’s, it became apparent that the same advanced lithium chemistry batteries engineered for medical use would have, with modification, real value for a range of commercial applications. Out of this core competency and market demand, Electrochem was founded in 1979. Today, Electrochem is the preeminent world leader in the research, development, design and manufacture of lithium batteries and packs for extreme environments.
